Satellite Dish

A satellite dish is a dish-shaped type of parabolic antenna designed to receive microwaves from communications satellites, which transmit data transmissions or broadcasts, such as satellite television.

The parabolic shape of a dish reflects the signal to the dish’s focal point. Mounted on brackets at the dish’s focal point is a device called a feedhorn. This feedhorn is essentially the front-end of a waveguide that gathers the signals at or near the focal point and ‘conducts’ them to a low-noise block downconverter or LNB. The LNB converts the signals from electromagnetic or radio waves to electrical signals and shifts the signals from the downlinked C-band and/or...

New Satellite

A C-band dish (often abbreviated to BUD, for “big ugly dish”) is a colloquial name for a TVRO satellite dish used to receive satellite television signals from FSS-type satellites on the microwave C band. BUDs are usually 6½ to 12 feet or two to 3.5 meters in diameter, and have been a source of much consternation (even local zoning disputes) due to their perception as an eyesore. Neighborhoods with restrictive covenants usually prohibit this size of dish, except where restrictions are illegal.

Satellite dishes will become ubiquitous in upcoming years. More communication satellites will certainly be launched, and the growth explosion in individual satellite dish ownership will continue....

Home Entertainment Installations

Home cinema, also commonly called home theater, are home entertainment set-ups that seek to reproduce the movie theater going experience and mood with the help of video and audio equipment in a private home.

In the 2010s, the term “home cinema” encompasses a range of systems meant for movie playback at home. The most basic and economical system could be a DVD player, a Standard Definition large-screen television with at least a 27″ diagonal screen size, and a “home theater in a box” surround sound speaker system with a subwoofer. While a more expensive home cinema set-up might include a Blu-ray Disc player or media center appliance/computer with a 10-foot...

Types of Outdoor Antennas

Small Multi-directional: The smallest of all outdoor television antennas. They are designed to receive equal amounts of signal from all directions. These generally receive signals up to a maximum of sixty km away from the transmitting station, greatly depending on the type. But, things such as large buildings or thick woods may greatly affect signal. They come in many different styles, ranging from small dishes to small metal bars, some can even mount on existing satellite dishes.

Medium Multi-directional: A step up from the small multi-directional,...
